Maj Gen Vincent NYAKARUNDI

Army Chief of Staff

Maj Gen Vincent NYAKARUNDI is the current Army Chief of Staff (ACOS) of Rwanda Defence Force (RDF). Prior to this position, he was the Head of Defence Intelligence (HDI) from 2019 to 2023, and a diplomat for over ten (10) years in the United States as the Military Attaché in Washington, D.C. and as the Defence and Military Advisor for the Permanent Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations in New York.

He is an experienced Rwandan General in Commanding troops, strategic planning, international relations and military leadership. Some of the positions held and appointments include commanding one of the two Rwandan military contingents that spearheaded the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) in 2004, Chief Instructor of the Rwanda Military Academy and instructor at the German UN Military Observers Training School in Germany, just to name a few.

Maj Gen V NYAKARUNDI holds a Masters in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College, as well as a Masters of Arts in Political Science and a Post Graduate Diploma in United Nations Studies from Long Island University (USA). In addition to the mentioned masters, he graduated from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.

Maj Gen V NYAKARUNDI is married with four children. His professional interest includes military strategy and policy, peacebuilding, and the protection of civilians (POC) in armed conflicts. He is fluent in English, French, Swahili and Kinyarwanda.
