Rwanda Defence Force

National defence is the responsibility of a professional national military force known as the “Rwanda Defence Force” as outlined in the Constitution of the Republic of Rwanda.

The Rwanda Defence Force is a professional national army abbreviated as “RDF”.

The Rwanda Defence Force is a professional national army abbreviated as “RDF”. 

Mission

The Rwanda Defence Force has the following mission:

  • To defend the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of the Republic of Rwanda;

  • To collaborate with security organs in safeguarding and restoring public order and ensuring compliance with laws

  • To participate in humanitarian relief operations whenever necessary;

  • To contribute to the development of the country;

  • To participate in international peacekeeping, humanitarian relief and training missions;

The Commander-in-Chief of the Rwanda Defence Force may determine other missions of the Rwanda Defence Force

Organisation

The Rwanda Defence Force comprises of the following services: 

  • Army; 

  •  Air Force; 

  • Military Health Service; and 

  • Reserve Force. 

The Commander-in-Chief of the Rwanda Defence Force may establish another service of the Rwanda Defence Force.

Presidential Order n° 014/01 of 25/08/2025 governing services of the Rwanda Defence Force determines the organisation and responsibilities of the RDF services.

Powers

The Rwanda Defence Force has the power to use military force and other means necessary to protect the national territory in accordance with the relevant legislation.
