RWANDAN PEACEKEEPERS INITIATE ANTI-MALNUTRITION CAMPAIGN IN MALAKAL COUNTY
Malakal, 23 May 2025
Rwandan female Peacekeepers ( Rwanbatt-2), in Malakal under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), conducted a three-day outreach program aimed at educating local mothers on combating malnutrition in children.
The initiative targeted residents and security forces based in Malakal Town, Upper Nile State.
The training focused on how to prepare nutritious meals using locally available ingredients and emphasized the importance of balanced diets in promoting healthy child development.
The outreach program concluded with a ceremony, where 120 local women received recognition for their participation.
Major General Joseph Mayon Akoon, the National Police Commissioner of Upper Nile State, presided over the event as the guest of honour. In his remarks, he expressed sincere appreciation for the peacekeepers’ dedication and their ongoing efforts to empower the women of Malakal. He also praised the strong partnership between the Rwandan peacekeepers and the local community.
Maj Gen Akoon encouraged the trainees to apply their newly acquired knowledge in providing balanced meals for their children and urged them to share this valuable information to others who were unable to attend the sessions, ensuring a wider impact in the fight against malnutrition.
Lieutenant Colonel Charles Rutagisha, Commanding Officer of Rwanbatt-2, said that the pride of every parent is raising healthy children, and achieving this begins with proper nutrition. He reminded the audience that well-nourished children grow into responsible citizens and the future of South Sudan depends on a strong, healthy young generation.
