UNMISS FORCE COMMANDER MEETS FEMALE ENGAGEMENT PEACEKEEPERS IN TORIT, SOUTH SUDAN
Torit, 19 September 2025
The Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian, today met with female engagement peacekeepers at the Rwanbatt-1 base in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, as part of his working visit to Rwandan peacekeepers.
The meeting provided an opportunity for open dialogue, with discussions centered on the challenges these peacekeepers face in operating in a complex environment, but continue to be successful.
During his interaction with the female peacekeepers, the Force Commander commended their efforts and encouraged them to continue engaging with the women of South Sudan to help rebuild trust and foster confidence within local communities.
He underscored the critical role peacekeepers play in protecting civilians—especially women who are vulnerable to sexual violence, and young girls at risk of early pregnancy. He emphasized that alleviating such suffering is a core responsibility of UNMISS.
The gathering brought together both military and police female engagement teams from Rwanbatt-1, as well as representatives from other contingents, including Australia, Bolivia, Bhutan, Brazil, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Germany, Jordan, Liberia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Zimbabwe, all serving under UNMISS in Sector South, based in Torit.
