UNMISS DEPUTY SECTOR COMMANDER IN UPPER NILE STATE COMMENDS RWANDAN PEACEKEEPERS FOR THEIR ROLE IN IMPROVING SECURITY IN SECTOR NORTH
Malakal, 17 October 2024
Rwandan peacekeepers under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), specifically Rwanbatt2, plays a vital role in stabilizing Sector North as emphasized by Colonel Nitin Mamgain, Deputy Sector Commander in a recent briefing in Malakal as he gave updates on the security and humanitarian situation in Upper Nile State (UNS).
Col Mamgain noted that security in UNS has improved significantly due to the proactive efforts of peacekeepers in the area. Tensions in Nassir have eased. This progress reflects UNMISS’s collaborative approach and effective engagements by peacekeeping forces.
In Bunj where RDF maintains Company Operating Base (COB), stability has returned following the appointment of a new County Commissioner, fostering peace and normalcy for local communities. However, challenges remain, such as the influx of returnees in Renk, straining humanitarian resources. Additionally, flooding in Kodok and Fashoda County has created a crisis, complicating relief efforts as the wet season hampers road access.
Rwandan peacekeepers remain committed to ensuring civilian safety and supporting stability efforts, demonstrating Rwanda’s dedication to peace in South Sudan.
