RWANDAN PEACEKEEPERS IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC DECORATED WITH UNITED NATIONS MEDALS
Bangui, 25 June 2025
Rwandan peacekeepers (RWABATT-1), under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), were today awarded United Nations medals in recognition of their outstanding service over the past eleven months.
The medal ceremony took place at M’Poko RWANBATT Base camp in Bangui.
During their deployment, the contingent carried out several key roles, including protecting civilians, safeguarding the President of the Central African Republic and his family, securing high-ranking MINUSCA officials, and providing security at Bangui International Airport.
The UN medal awarding ceremony was presided over by MINUSCA Force Commander, Lieutenant General Humphrey Nyone, who commended the Rwandan peacekeepers for their professionalism, discipline, and commitment to peacekeeping efforts not only in the Central African Republic but also globally.
“On behalf of MINUSCA, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to RWABATT-1 for your hard work and quick response. You have consistently demonstrated a positive mindset throughout these eleven months. I also want to extend my gratitude, through the Rwandan Ambassador present here, to the Republic of Rwanda for its unwavering support, not only to MINUSCA but also to the entire United Nations system. Rwanda’s contribution to peacekeeping missions around the world is highly valued,” said Lt Gen Humphrey Nyone.
RWABATT-1 Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Alphonse Kigenza, expressed gratitude for the guidance and support received from various stakeholders and praised the dedication and resilience of the men and women under his command.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including His Excellency Olivier Kayumba, Ambassador of Rwanda to the Central African Republic; Major General Freddy Sakama, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Central African Republic Armed Forces; senior UN officials and members of the Rwandan community residing in CAR.
