Rwandan peacekeepers and community in South Sudan commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

On 7th April 2023, Rwandan community living in South Sudan and Military and police peacekeepers serving under United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), other UN Contingents, UN agencies, South Sudanese and UNMISS officials, gathered together at Tomping Base Camp, Juba, for the 29th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
In his remarks, H. E Joseph Rutabana, Ambassador of Rwanda to Uganda and South Sudan, acknowledged that the commemoration of Genocide against the Tutsi provides an opportunity for Rwandans and global community to stand together and draw lessons from Rwanda’s tragic history with the goal to fight genocide ideology, hatred, and preventing future genocides around the World.
Speaking on behalf of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Victor Fassama, the Head of Field Office in Central Equatorial, commended the resilience of Rwandans after the tragic history and path taken to create lasting peace, stability and prosperity after dark days.
Rwandan peacekeepers serving under UNMISS in Malakal also organized the 29th commemoration of 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The event was marked by the candle lighting, a symbolic way to remember those who were brutally killed. A documentary film describing the background and execution of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi was also shown to audience.
The event was attended by the different contingents and other staff components working under UNMISS.
