Rwanda to Host Formula 1 African Grand Prix in Bugesera
Rwanda is set to welcome Formula 1, with the African Grand Prix expected to join the championship calendar in the early 2030s. The race will take place at a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera District, approximately 40 kilometres south of Kigali, marking a significant step in Rwanda’s ambition to host world-class sporting competitions.
The planned circuit will be designed to work in harmony with the surrounding natural landscape, incorporating the area's elevation changes to create a distinctive and challenging racing experience for drivers. The initial designs offer a glimpse of a venue that aims to combine the demands of elite motorsport with Rwanda’s unique terrain.
The announcement places Rwanda at the centre of Formula 1’s anticipated return to Africa, creating an opportunity to connect the country with one of the world's most widely followed sporting competitions.
Beyond the excitement on the track, hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix has the potential to create wider economic and social opportunities. Major motorsport events can stimulate tourism, hospitality, transport, infrastructure development and local business, while creating opportunities for Rwandan professionals and young people to develop skills in event management, engineering, technology, media and other areas of the sports industry.
The project also aligns with Rwanda’s broader ambition to use sport as a driver of national development, international visibility and investment. By pursuing opportunities at the highest level of global sport, the country continues to position itself as a destination for major international events and a platform for new partnerships.
The planned Grand Prix represents more than a racing event. It offers an opportunity to inspire a new generation of Rwandans, expand the country's sporting ecosystem and demonstrate the role that sport can play in economic transformation.
As preparations and planning progress towards the early 2030s, Rwanda looks ahead to welcoming the world to Bugesera for a new chapter in African motorsport.
