RDF AND UPDF STRENGTHEN CROSS-BORDER TIES WITH THE THIRD PROXIMITY FRIENDLY FOOTBALL MATCH IN KABALE
Kabale, Uganda, 06 December 2025
The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 2 Infantry Division visited the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) 2nd Division for the third Proximity Friendly football match in Kabale. The engagement aimed at enhancing cross-border cooperation and strengthening the spirit of good neighbourliness between the two defence forces. The competitive and entertaining match concluded with a 5–2 victory for the UPDF team.
Uganda’s leadership at the event was represented by the Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development (General Duties), Hon Henry Musasizi, who commended the defence forces for using sports and joint activities to foster unity, collaboration, and improved relations.
The UPDF was represented by the 2 Infantry Division Commander, Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, who emphasized that such engagements contribute greatly to building trust and understanding between the two countries.
Upon arrival in Kabale, the RDF delegation paid a courtesy call on the district leadership. They were received by the Kabale District Chairman, Nelson Nshangabasheija, who welcomed the visit and highlighted the importance of ongoing cooperation in promoting security, social ties, and regional development.
Brig Gen Deo Rusanganwa, Commander of RDF 2 Infantry Division, who was the head of RDF delegation, commended UPDF leadership and the people of Kabale for their warm reception, he reiterated RDF’s readiness to continue working closely with UPDF and local authorities for the benefit of citizens on both sides of the border. “This proximity engagement is more than a football match, it is an expression of our
shared commitment to peace, mutual respect and community service. Through sport, we strengthen the bonds that make our border communities safer and more prosperous.”
Both delegations participated in a joint route march through Kabale Town, symbolizing solidarity and shared commitment to peace and stability.
The forces also engaged in tree planting activity, reinforcing their dedication to environmental protection and strengthening community relations.
The event attracted a wide range of participants, including defence attachés from both Rwanda and Uganda, senior officers and junior officers from both militaries, the Mayor of Gicumbi District, and members of the local community.
Their presence underscored the significance of continued collaboration and people-to-people engagement between the two nations.
Both UPDF and RDF reaffirmed their commitment to further deepening cooperation across various domains, noting that activities such as sports and community interaction play a crucial role in building lasting partnerships.
