RDF AND UPDF SOLIDIFY RELATIONS THROUGH SPORTS
Ntungamo, Uganda – 31 May 2025
In a remarkable display of regional cooperation and unity, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 5 Division and the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) 2 Division played a friendly football match at Kyamate Playground in Ntungamo District, Uganda.
The event, which attracted local residents, military personnel, and dignitaries from both countries, formed part of ongoing efforts to build trust, deepen collaboration, and strengthen the good working relations between the two sister nations.
The match concluded with a 4–3 victory for the UPDF in a penalty shootout, followed by a jubilant trophy celebration.
Speaking at the event, senior commanders from both divisions emphasised the significance of such engagements beyond military operations. “This is more than just a game. It is the result of close interactions and a gesture of friendship – a symbol of our shared commitment to peace and regional cooperation,” said Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the UPDF 2 Division.
Brig Gen Pascal Muhizi, Commander of the RDF 5 Division, echoed this sentiment: “We may come from different countries, but events like this remind us that we share common goals and values. Through unity and open engagement, we can continue to foster a stable and secure region.”
The Chief Guest, Lt Gen (Rtd) Jim Owoyesigire, former Commander of the Air Forces, remarked that the friendship between the two countries is rooted in the mutual desire for freedom, peace, and democracy. He expressed appreciation to the President of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and the President of Rwanda, H.E. Paul Kagame, as well as to the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces and the RDF Chief of Defence Staff.
The friendly match reflects a broader initiative between the two defence forces to enhance bilateral relations through dialogue, joint activities, and community outreach.
As part of the wider programme, the event also featured a route march through Ntungamo Town and tree planting.
Hon Kamateneti Bata, Member of Parliament for Ntungamo District, welcomed the event, noting that such interactions bring a sense of peace and unity to the border region, historically marked by both challenges and cooperation.
Also in attendance included defence attachés from both countries, Rwanda and Uganda.
