RDF AND UPDF AGREE ON STRATEGIES TO DETER NEGATIVE ACTS AFFECTING BORDER COMMUNITIES
Musanze, 30 November 2024
The RDF and UPDF concluded today their third Proximity Commanders meeting in Musanze. They agreed to implement strategies aimed at deterring negative acts impacting border communities.
The meeting mainly focused on enhancing sensitization and awareness mechanisms for border communities to curb illicit cross-border activities such as drug smuggling and human trafficking.
Speaking about the outcomes of the meeting, RDF Army Chief of Staff, Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi, emphasized that cross-border issues are now resolved more efficiently through direct coordination between field commanders. “Previously, border issues required lengthy processes involving embassies or higher headquarters in Kampala and Kigali. Today, commanders on the ground can address these problems swiftly, either through direct meetings or phone calls,” he noted.
UPDF Land Forces Commander, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, highlighted the positive impact of these meetings on bilateral relations. “These engagements have significantly improved coordination and cooperation between our two forces, enabling us to work together more smoothly and resolve issues quickly,” Lt Gen Muhanga remarked.
In addition to the discussions, participants visited key historical sites, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum. These visits provided insights into the tragic events of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, where over one million lives were lost, and the heroic efforts of the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) to stop the genocide and rebuild the nation on principles of unity and reconciliation.
