PROXIMITY COMMANDERS OF RWANDA AND TANZANIA STRENGTHEN CROSS BORDER SECURITY
Nyagatare, 29 May 2025
The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) are convening the 12th Proximity Commanders’ Security Meeting from May 28 to 30 in Eastern Province at Nyagatare district. This gathering brings together military commanders deployed along the shared border to address key security concerns and strengthen cross-border cooperation.
The commanders reviewed the progress achieved since the previous session with a focus on curbing illegal activities and improving the security of border communities. Both parties underscored the importance of sustained collaboration and joint initiatives to tackle emerging threats, while also acknowledging the positive results realised under the leadership of their respective Heads of State.
In his opening remarks, Brig Gen Pascal Muhizi, the RDF 5 Infantry Division Commander, expressed appreciation to the Heads of State for their visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to peace, and dedication to regional integration. He acknowledged that their guidance has fostered the political will and supportive environment necessary for effective collaboration between the two defence forces. He also reminded the commanders that ensuring peace and security along their shared border is not merely a duty but a collective responsibility.
He further urged continued vigilance and a forward-looking approach. He emphasised the need for vigilance to deal with cross border threats such as terrorism and illegal economic activities.
Brig Gen Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa, the TPDF 202 Infantry Brigade Commander and head of the delegation, said that previous meetings have helped to resolve many challenges and issues, thanks to the strong commitment from both sides. As a result, the entire border area and the communities living along it now enjoy peace and harmony, an outcome made possible through trust, transparency, and mutual understanding.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call to Kirehe district officials, where they were received by Mayor Bruno Rangira and toured the Karushuga border area, adjacent to Tanzania’s Kaisho district. Kirehe shares a border with Ngara district in Tanzania.
