President Kagame inaugurates Karama Model Village to mark Liberation Day
Kigali, 3 July 2019
Today in Nyarugenge district, President of the Republic and Commander-In-Chief of RDF Paul Kagame inaugurated Karama Model Village constructed by the City of Kigali in partnership with the RDF Reserve Force. The village is home to 240 households relocated from high risk zones around Kigali, living apartments, a secondary school, and an Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD).
On behalf of the relocated families, Mariya Mukangira said that she was living Kiruhura cell of Nyabugogo sector where she was always fearing to be carried away by the rain. “We are very delighted for this noble action by our government and promise to make sure the infrastructure we were given is well kept,” she said.
In his remarks, President Paul Kagame noted that “the ongoing phase of the liberation struggle is about achieving transformation and being the Rwandans and Africans we should be”.
“This model village shows that Liberation is not simply about words, it is about action. It is an example of what we can accomplish and that we can do a lot more. You must each play your role, beginning with taking care of the home you were given. Liberation means believing that a good life is not a right only reserved for others, every Rwandan deserves it,” said President Kagame.
About 1104 students will be able to study at the newly built school which has 24 classrooms, 3 laboratories and a library. The Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) has a capacity to hold about 180 pupils and has a recreation area. The total cost of these infrastructures is estimated to be more that 8 billion Rwf together with the 7.9km asphalt road Nyabarongo–Nyamirambo road.
