MoD wins two trophies in the inter-ministerial tournament
Kigali, 2 February 2019
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) won two trophies today in the annual inter-ministerial, government institutions and private sector tournament organised by the Rwanda Association for the promotion of sports among the Work Force (ARPST).
In men's category, MoD edged the IPRC Ngoma in volleyball to be crowned the 2018-2019 champions, while in basketball, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) failed to conquer the defence ministry.
MoD came second in football after failing to beat the National Institute of Statistics Rwanda (NISR) to 3-1.
In the women’s category, MoD emerged second in volleyball after being edged by Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA).
The championship which concluded today, started on 10 October 2018 with about 46 teams from 81 teams that participated from both public and private institutions.
The final participants include NISR and MoD in football, NIDA and PRIMATURE in basketball as nine trophies were given to the winners.
The guest of honour, Honourable Espérance Nyirasafari, Minister for Sports and Culture said, “Sports is a culture and should therefore be encouraged among employees in both private and public sectors”, adding that the time set aside on Friday for sports activities should be used well for the benefit of workers.
She also urged workers to always attend the Car free day exercise.
Rtd Lt Innocent Rwabuhihi, the Secretary General of ARPST said that the main reason for sports among employees is mainly for health reasons and networking.
“Government has set aside Friday afternoon for sports activities so as to help reduce risk of diseases that comes as a result of one’s occupation. Sports is life, when one is healthy they can easily serve their families and country as well,” added Rtd Lt Rwabuhihi.
