Minister Uwimana Consolee urges families to honour and care for older persons
Kigali,06 October 2026– Minister Uwimana Consolee joined residents of Rutunga Sector in Gasabo District to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons, an event that also officially launched the month dedicated to citizen participation in planning, budgeting and performance contracts for the 2027/2028 fiscal year.
The Minister highlighted the important role older persons play in families and national development, describing the celebration as an opportunity to recognise their value, uphold their rights, promote knowledge sharing and strengthen solidarity between generations.
She emphasised that older persons should not be viewed merely as recipients of support but as active contributors to the country’s development. Their wisdom, experience and guidance remain valuable resources for communities and future generations.
Minister Uwimana called on families to take greater responsibility for the wellbeing of older persons, urging children to care for and respect their parents. She also encouraged parents to strengthen their role in raising children and instilling values such as respect, self-respect, hard work, patriotism and appreciation of Rwandan cultural values.
The Minister further urged residents to actively participate in the planning, budgeting and performance contract processes for the 2027/2028 fiscal year, ensuring that community priorities are reflected in development plans.
She stressed the importance of building families and communities that value older persons, raise children responsibly and contribute to national development.
The event reinforced the message that caring for older persons, nurturing future generations and participating in community planning are shared responsibilities essential to Rwanda’s sustainable development.
