Minister Murwanashyaka Inspects Strategic Infrastructure Projects to Advance Rwanda’s Sustainable Development

Kigali, Rwanda 11 August 2026: Minister of Infrastructure Damien Murwanashyaka carried out a working visit to assess the implementation and progress of key infrastructure projects across the country, reaffirming Rwanda’s commitment to developing resilient, sustainable and inclusive infrastructure that supports long-term national development.

The working visit began in the Northern Province and areas surrounding Kigali, where the Minister inspected ongoing works to expand and upgrade the Nzove Water Treatment Plant. Upon completion, the project will increase the plant’s production capacity from 40,000 cubic metres to 65,000 cubic metres of water per day, adding an additional 25,000 cubic metres to the daily supply.

The Minister also visited the Nyabarongo II Hydropower Plant, a major energy infrastructure project expected to generate 43.5 megawatts of electricity. Construction works have reached 73% completion, marking significant progress towards strengthening Rwanda’s domestic electricity generation capacity.

“Rwanda remains firmly committed to investing in infrastructure that is sustainable, resilient and responsive to the needs of our people. We are accelerating the implementation of strategic projects in water, energy and other critical sectors to support economic transformation, improve access to essential services and build a sustainable future for generations to come,” Minister Damien Murwanashyaka said.

During the working visit across different parts of the Western and Northern Provinces, Minister Murwanashyaka also inspected the Kivu Belt Water Treatment Plant, which has a capacity of 13,000 cubic metres of clean water per day, contributing to improved access to safe and reliable water services.

In the energy sector, the Minister visited KivuWatt, a power generation facility that uses methane gas extracted from Lake Kivu to generate electricity, with an installed capacity of 26 megawatts.

He further visited a project to construct a plant that will process methane gas into energy for cooking. The initiative is expected to contribute to Rwanda’s transition towards cleaner cooking solutions, reduce reliance on traditional cooking fuels and support efforts to promote environmentally sustainable energy use.

The inspection of these projects underscores the Government’s continued focus on accelerating the delivery of strategic infrastructure while ensuring that investments contribute to climate resilience, sustainable urbanisation, improved public services and inclusive economic growth.

Through continued investment in water, energy and other critical infrastructure, Rwanda is strengthening the foundations required to achieve sustainable development and improve the quality of life of its citizens.
