MINEDUC–World Bank partnership transforms Rubengera TTC into a modern teacher training hub
A partnership between the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) and the World Bank has transformed Rubengera Teacher Training College in Karongi District with modern classrooms, science laboratories, student dormitories, administrative offices, sanitation facilities, a kitchen, and volunteer housing.
For students, the investment is already making a difference.
Igizeneza Kanyana Benitha, a Senior Six student in the Science Teacher Education programme, says the new laboratories will help future teachers build stronger practical skills.
"We are now more motivated to study science because we can learn through practical experiments, not just theory. This will help us graduate as competent teachers and better prepare our future students," she said.
The college's Principal, Dominique Niyomugabo, said the upgraded facilities are improving both learning and student welfare. New dormitories now accommodate 255 female students, with integrated sanitation facilities that provide greater comfort, privacy, and hygiene.
The new science laboratory includes dedicated Chemistry, Physics, and Biology sections, as well as Smart TV technology that enhances practical learning. Class sizes have also been reduced from about 60 to a maximum of 40 students, creating a more conducive learning environment.
Karongi Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Umuhoza Pascasie, said the investment will improve education quality by equipping future teachers with the practical knowledge and skills they need.
Established in 1972, Rubengera TTC currently trains 744 students and is supported by 28 lecturers and six international educators.
