Gen Nyamvumba emphasises intelligence sharing as regional chiefs meet in Kigali
Kigali, 05 February 2019
Chiefs/Directors of Military intelligence from the East African Community are meeting in Kigali to carry out the latest continental threat assessment.
The two day meeting delegates from member states; Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Burundi and the host Rwanda, will deliberate on regional security concerns and come up with concrete intelligence and possible solutions.
While opening the meeting, Gen Patrick Nyamvumba, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) in Kigali said that the meeting of the military intelligence chiefs since its inception provided a platform for partner states to share information and intelligence on issues of mutual concern for our region and played a crucial role in promoting peace and security within and outside the region.
“It’s my firm belief that this meeting will come up with concrete recommendations to support the decision making process in overcoming the mentioned threats that we are facing in order to provide adequate security to our people we are mandated to protect”, Gen Nyamvumba said.
Speaking to the media after the opening, Colonel Andrew Nyamvumba, the Head Defence Intelligence said that: “The absence of accurate and timely intelligence renders these military operations not only ineffective but also continues to put our states at risk”, emphasising that the chiefs and directors are to come up with recommendations to support the military decision making process in overcoming the threats the region is facing
The meeting will review the regional security situation with the guidance of EAC partner states defence chiefs and also consider a report by the regional defence Counter-terrorism centre on the profile of Al Sunnah Wa Jama'ah a negative armed group operating in Mozambique and its links with other terrorist groups operating in the East African region.
In their meeting held December 2018 in Mwanza-Tanzania, the chiefs of intelligence recommended that the regional defence counter terrorism centre profile the group and establish its links with terrorist groups in the region and present a report in this meeting.
In this meeting Rwanda will take over the chairmanship of the meeting of the chiefs and directors of military intelligence of the six member states of the East African Community (EAC) which was held by Uganda.
