DEPUTY DEFENCE SPOKESPERSON JOINS UTB IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 1994 GENOCIDE AGAINST THE TUTSI
On 12 June 2026, the Deputy Defence Spokesperson, Lt Col Simon Kabera joined students, lecturers, and staff of the University of Tourism, Technology and Business Studies (UTB) in Kicukiro for a commemoration event honoring the victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.
The event brought together members of the University community to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the genocide and to reflect on the lessons that continue to guide Rwanda’s journey toward unity, reconciliation, and sustainable peace.

Addressing the students, Lt Col Kabera reflected on the tragedy of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi and outlined the ten stages through which genocide was planned and executed. He also highlighted the decisive role played by the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) in stopping the genocide when the international community failed to intervene.
He encouraged students to actively use all available platforms, including social media, to combat genocide ideology, denial, and the distortion of historical facts. He emphasized the importance of preserving the truth about the genocide and urged the youth to contribute to building a peaceful, united, and resilient nation.

The commemoration provided an opportunity for young people to deepen their understanding of Rwanda’s history, honor the memory of the victims, and reaffirm their commitment to ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.
