DEPUTY DEFENCE SPOKESPERSON JOINS EMPLOYEES OF MARRIOTT KIGALI AND FOUR POINTS HOTELS TO REMEMBER GENOCIDE AGAINST THE TUTSI IN 1994
Today, at the Nyanza Genocide Memorial, the Deputy Defence Spokesperson, Lt Col Simon Kabera, joined employees from Kigali Marriott and Four Points by Sheraton Kigali Hotels for a commemoration event held in memory of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
In his remarks, Lt Col Kabera emphasized that commemoration is a time to honor and restore dignity to those who perished in the Genocide, noting that they were killed in a dehumanizing manner and denied the value of their humanity. He stated that remembrance provides an opportunity to reaffirm their dignity and keep their memory alive.
He further explained how the Genocide was planned and executed by the leadership of the time, while highlighting the decisive role played by the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) in stopping the Genocide when the international community failed to intervene.
Lt Col Kabera urged participants to actively contribute to safeguarding the country by using platforms such as social media to share accurate information, educating others, supporting unity-driven policies, understanding Rwanda’s history, and countering narratives that distort it. He stressed that these actions are essential in promoting truth and national resilience.
He added that through learning and teaching the truth, the youth become ambassadors of remembrance after gaining a clear understanding of the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
He underscored that commemorating the Genocide is not only Rwanda’s responsibility, but a global duty. He called on all Rwandans to remain guardians of history, advocates of truth, and to stand firm against genocide denial, both in Rwanda and beyond.
