DEPUTY DEFENCE SPOKESPERSON HIGHLIGHTS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF NATIONAL HEROES TO STUDENTS OF NTARE LOUISENLUND SCHOOL
Bugesera, 2 February 2026
The Deputy Defence Spokesperson, Lt Col Simon Kabera, today delivered a lecture titled “The Significance of National Heroes” to students and staff of Ntare Louisenlund School in Nyamata, Bugesera District. The lecture was part of activities marking the 32nd National Heroes Day.
Lt Col Kabera highlighted the core values of heroism in Rwanda’s history, including patriotism, selflessness, integrity, dedication to service, the defense of what is right, and respect for human dignity. He explained that, in the Rwandan context, heroism represents a commitment to a noble cause through extraordinary actions that benefit others, guided by sacrifice, resilience, truth, and justice.
He further outlined the three categories of national heroes Imanzi, Imena, and Ingenzi and emphasized the critical role of citizens, particularly the youth, in upholding and promoting these values in contemporary society.
The Deputy Defence Spokesperson cautioned students against behaviors that undermine life and human dignity, such as alcoholism, drug abuse, violence, immorality, self-degradation, poor hygiene, and the misuse of technology. He encouraged them to actively contribute to nation-building by drawing lessons from national heroes and exemplary leaders, preserving national achievements, strengthening unity, and choosing good over evil.
He also emphasized the importance of loving and properly using Kinyarwanda, as well as critically evaluating external influences by rejecting harmful practices while embracing positive cultural change.
Rwandans across the country commemorated the 32nd National Heroes Day, reaffirming the enduring importance of heroism and unity in Rwanda’s journey of development.
