DEFENCE SPOKESPERSON URGES STUDENTS TO EMBRACE HEROISM AND UNITY ON NATIONAL HEROES DAY
Kigali, 2 February 2026
The Defence Spokesperson, Brig Gen Ronald Rwivanga, on Monday addressed students at Riviera High School as part of activities marking the 32nd National Heroes Day, calling on the youth to embrace heroism, unity, and patriotism as foundations for national development.
Speaking under the national theme, “Heroism and Unity of Rwandans, Pillars of Development,” Brig Gen Rwivanga underscored the importance of National Heroes Day as a moment to reflect on the sacrifices and values that have shaped Rwanda’s history and progress. He described heroism as the courage, integrity, and selflessness demonstrated by individuals who dedicate themselves to serving others and protecting the nation, even at great personal cost.
He noted that Rwanda’s culture of heroism is deeply rooted in respect for humanity, cooperation, generosity, and harmonious living—values that have guided the country from ancient times through resistance to colonialism and the struggle to stop the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Brig Gen Rwivanga urged students to uphold discipline, honesty, responsibility, and patriotism, while avoiding behaviors that undermine unity, including discrimination, selfishness, divisionism, poor leadership, and laziness. He emphasized that the youth, as custodians of Rwanda’s future, must prioritize education, health, innovation, and productivity in order to contribute meaningfully to national transformation.
He concluded by reminding students that preserving Rwanda’s achievements is a collective responsibility and that heroism and unity remain essential pillars for building a resilient, peaceful, and developed nation.
