DEFENCE AND SECURITY MEDICAL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES PROGRESS IN NYARUGURU DISTRICT
Nyaruguru, 14 May 2025
From 28 April 2025 to-date, more than 6,300 patients received free medical treatment at Munini District Hospital in Nyaruguru District as part of the Defence and Security Citizen Outreach Programme 2025. The initiative, led by medical specialists from the Rwanda Military Referral and Teaching Hospital (RMRTH), was conducted at Munini Hospital following a similar month long Programme in Nyagatare District
Over the past three weeks in Munini Hospital, patients received treatment for a wide range of health conditions, including gynecological issues, mental health, Orthopedics, general surgery, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), dental care, ophthalmology, dermatology, internal medicine, and pediatrics.
The Defence and Security Citizen Outreach Programme2025, launched on 17 March 2025, recorded over 21,600 patients treated across the two districts, Nyagatare and Nyaruguru.
Nyiranzeyimana Patricia, a patient suffering from uterine prolapse, expressed her gratitude to the RDF medical team for the surgery that relieved her long-term suffering.
“I had been living with this illness for a long time without receiving proper treatment. I was even planning to go to CHUB at Butare due to recent complications. Then I heard that military medical specialists from Kanombe were offering free treatment here. I came to Munini Hospital, received surgery, and now I’m recovering and waiting to go home I thank them for the service provided to me,” she said.
Dr. Valence Murengezi, Director of Munini District Hospital, emphasized the significant impact of the outreach, noting that the number of patients treated has increased dramatically thanks to support from RMRTH specialists.
“Previously, we used to transfer complex cases to CHUB or other referral hospitals. Now, with the presence of specialists here, those cases are handled here. As you can see, many people are coming because these services are both accessible and free. It was difficult for patients to access specialized treatment before due to limited capacity. This is a major improvement,” he said.
Dr. Lt Col (Rtd) Jean Nepomuscène Murindabyuma, Team Leader of the RDF medical team, stated that while the initial plan was to serve patients for three weeks, the turnout, averaging 600 to 800 patients per day, led the team to extend their stay by an additional week.
“Given the high demand, the leadership decided to extend the outreach by another week before moving to the next district, to ensure we can attend to all those still in need,” he said.
As the country approaches Kwibohora31, the programme stands as a testament to the commitment to improving the health and well-being of Rwandan citizens.
